Knight Rider GPS... With the Voice of K.I.T.T.!

Yes, you read that right! I've been sitting on this for a while out of respect to KITTrules big reveal, but the news is all over the Internet now: satnav-maker Mio have announced the must-have item for any Knight Rider fan: a GPS system that actually uses William Daniels' voice.

It is a standard full-color GPS unit that mounts on your dash, with a glossy black frame and the classic Knight Rider logo. The sides are designed to resemble the Knight 2000's distinctive nose, with scanner bars that double-up as a kind of voice modulator. The lights don't sweep back and forth like the original's as the effect was considered too distracting to drivers, but they do light up periodically and during startup.

The unit is personalised, too: K.I.T.T. can be programmed to greet you by name every time you turn it on, with a variety of different recorded intros. The phrases have been specially recorded for the unit by Mr. Daniels, they are not samples taken from the TV series.

The device is going to be for Canada and the US -- but there is hope for global fans: additional maps are available for purchase at Mio's website for their other devices, so it's expected that this unit won't be any different.

It has a SRP of $270 when it becomes available.

"K.I.T.T." Sold on eBay

The Super-Pursuit Mode K.I.T.T. replica, previously owned by murdered businessman Andrew Kissel and relisted on eBay last week, finally sold for $53,000. The auction generated a great deal of publicity around the globe, and in many reports there continued to be confusion as to the car's actual origins or role in the original series.

As previously stated, it seems the Trans Am was used during production of the later years of Knight Rider, but it was not an actual Super Pursuit Mode vehicle (which are all believed to have been destroyed). It was acquired by legendary Hollywood customiser George Barris, who added the wings and spoilers to make it look like the SPM car. It then appeared on The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour and The Benchwarmers movie.

Considering that the original Super Pursuit car came from Barris' shop, it's a shame that this one couldn't have been more accurate (that rear spoiler attached to K.I.T.T.'s bumper is a horrible mistake, in my opinion). It'll be interesting to learn if the car ends up in a private collection, or if it will be put to work either on the car show circuit or make further appearances in TV or film. Time will tell.

"K.I.T.T." Back on eBay

The Super-Pursuit Mode K.I.T.T. owned by murdered businessman Andrew Kissel has been relisted on eBay. Bidding starts at $20,000 for the vehicle, which was used in the movie The Benchwarmers.

Patrick R. Gill, who is handling the dismantling of Kissel's estate, had put the car up for auction months ago but it was later removed after he started getting calls from all over the world questioning its authenticity. Gill apparently did more research and said yesterday that it is one of a handful of K.I.T.T. cars that were used in the original series.

The history of the car itself is a little sketchy. It is NOT a screen-used S.P.M. vehicle, but it seems that the Trans Am itself was used during the production of the show. The car was acquired by George Barris, who added the sculpts to the car to make it look like the 4th Season's SPM. The car later appeared on The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour and the aforementioned Benchwarmers movie.

Kissel had purchased the car from an auction house in May 2005 for $69,000 but never took possession of it. Part of the agreement when he bought it was that he would allow the car to be used in The Benchwarmers.

New Series News!

Knight Rider Online have been in contact with the Knight Rider production offices, and have learned that the new series will begin production on Monday, June 23rd. It will be shooting in LA, not relocating to Canada, as some 'net rumours suggested.

The show will also have a presence at the San Diego Comicon in July, so if you can make it, be there!

KITTsite.com have posted some details about the new series premiere. The title of the first new episode is apparently Knight in Shining Armor, and it will contain a twist to Mike Traceur's life that will change his future forever (and bring him more in-line with Michael Knight, and the mythology of the original Knight Rider, if it's true).

They also report that two new characters named Billy and Zoe, will be introduced. Both work for Knight Industries, but it is not yet known in what capacity.

Bruening and K.I.T.T. at Canwest, Toronto

Justin Bruening made an appearance with K.I.T.T. at yesterday's Canwest "UpFront" presentations in Toronto, the last of the annual conventions designed to sell advertisers on the upcoming fall schedules. Whilst there, he spoke to the media about the new series.

“Just as the original series was reinvented as a sequel for the two-hour movie, the new series will be reinvented again," he said. "Picking up six months after our little origin story, everything will be different. The car will have a different look and will be able to morph into a different attack mode each week. There’s also talk of different gadgets in every episode.”

That's an interesting quote; it's been well-known that the "Attack Mode" Mustang was getting an overhaul, but is Bruening saying there will be a different look to the Attack Mode each week, or just that the series' Attack Mode will be different to the one seen in the two-hour movie? Time will tell...

And, what does Bruening think of his four-wheeled co-star?

"He's a bit of a diva," Bruening said.

Bruce Davison Talks New Knight Rider

The L.A. Daily News caught a couple of soundbites from Bruce Davison about the new show:

"I get to be dad and I get to be the inventor and sort of be right in the middle of a lot of it," Bruce told them.

They describe his character of Charles Graiman as "an eccentric physicist who creates the Knight Industries Three Thousand, the second generation K.I.T.T."

"Get ready, there's going to be a lot of new stuff," he said of the revival. "It's going to be a lot of fun which is what we're looking forward to more than anything. K.I.T.T.'s back and he's bad!"

We can't wait!

Universal Studios Hit By Fire

A fire tore through Universal Studios in Hollywood yesterday, destroying sets familiar to Knight Rider fans and film lovers around the world. The blaze broke out on a sound stage featuring New York brownstone facades at about 4:30 a.m. and quickly spread to the backlot's Courthouse Square, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Michael Freeman said. The fire was contained to the lot but burned for more than 12 hours before the final flames were extinguished.

The Courthouse Square set -- most famous as Hill Valley in Back to the Future -- appeared as White Rock in Season 1's Good Day at White Rock, Alpine Crest in A Nice, Indecent Little Town, and Cactus, Arizona in Season 4's Sky Knight. It also appeared in Trust Doesn't Rust, and as itself in several scenes of the episode Fright Knight. The New York Streets were used in A Nice, Indecent Little Town, Knight of the Juggernaut and Knight Song.

Disconcertingly, a vault containing between 40,000-50,000 videos and film reels archiving Universal's film and TV history also burned. "We have duplicates of everything," said Ron Meyer, NBC Universal president and chief operating officer. "Nothing is lost forever." Firefighters apparently managed to recover hundreds of titles.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was expected to be in the millions of dollars.
