Notes From the Underground: Some Day

Billy's Blog was updated last night, where Billy talks about his combat training from Knight of the Hunter: "Suffice it to say, next time you even think about messing with Billy Morgan... Just walk away, man. Walk away. It’s not worth it." He also writes about his feelings for Zoe, and reveals the highlight of his week:

"'Some day' might not be as good as 'tomorrow.' But 'some day' is better than 'never.' And she clearly told me, for everyone in the gym to hear, that I could buy her a drink 'some day.' It might not be much, but it’s the highlight of my not-so-fortunate week. Anyone who tells you that Warcraft and Second Life are 'safer' than the real world, they are sorely mistaken. And I have the black eye to prove it."

Gary Scott Thompson Answers More Questions!

Showrunner Gary Scott Thompson has posted another Q&A over at the Knight Writers Blog. Some of the highlights include:

Q: Will KITT eventually smash into things or just continue to avoid them?
A: Hopefully we’ll do a little of both.

Q: Will you explain specifically how Charles Graiman connects to the original series? Flashbacks perhaps?
A: Upcoming episodes will clarify Graiman’s connection to the original series.

Q: Keep up the good work but make it a little darker to give some edge for the older viewers like myself, I'm 20.
A: Working on giving it a little more edge.

Justin Bruening Talks Knight Rider

Philly.com have been talking Mustangs and Knight Rider with our star, Justin Bruening. Part of their Celebrity Rides strand, Justin tells them about his real-life ride: "I wanted a Shelby Cobra when I moved back to L.A. and I thought that Lexi [Alexa Havens, Justin's wife] would buy me one for Christmas," he says. "It worked out conveniently that I got a job where I get to drive one every day, so now she doesn't have to buy me one."

Instead, Bruening stayed within his new vehicular family, obtaining a 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt after filming on the Knight Rider pilot movie wrapped shooting. He admits that appearances did play a role in his choice. "Driving a Camaro around probably wouldn't be that good," he says, even though he has an uncle who exclusively drives the Chevy-made muscle car. Bruening considered buying a standard Mustang GT and fixing it up to his specifications, "but I looked at what I wanted to do with the car, I basically had just designed the Bullitt. It was already made, and it was perfect." He did some of his own modifications on the car, but tried hard not to to mess with the Bullitt's "unassuming" quality. "I didn't get fuzzy dice or a TV that comes out of the rear-view mirror," he says. Instead, he installing a large subwoofer in the trunk; and he had a Hurst shifter installed for aesthetics as much as anything else, though he does note that it's "sacrilege" to drive a Bullitt with an automatic transmission.

When asked to compare his Knight Rider with the original, Justin says, "When I watched the show in '83, it was great. But when I went back and watched Knight Rider reruns, that show would never hold up today. It was such an amazing show with such a great premise of a talking car. Nobody's car talked. So that was the coolest thing on TV. And now we're drenched in reality, so we need realistic storylines.

"We have a talking car, so obviously we have something that's a little absurd," he says. "But our episodes are based on realistic stories and K.I.T.T. has just become another actor on our show. It's like a buddy-cop film."

And how does he feel about K.I.T.T.'s ability to transform? "That's pretty neat," he beams. "He transforms not into tall robots, but into other cars. It's a form of camouflage, a tactical advantage. He can transform into any other car, which is a neat aspect of the mission. Sometimes my character doesn't even know it's him."

Knight Rider Picked Up for Full Season!

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that NBC has picked up Knight Rider for a full season, ordering the "back nine" episodes and taking the season's tally up to 22.

They report that "Rider has been modestly rated since its premiere, typically matching CBS' comedy block for second place in its 8 p.m. time slot. The most recent episode was seen by 6.9 million viewers, and earned a 2.3 adults 19-49 rating and 7 share.

"The Rider pickup marks the first freshman fall NBC series to receive a full season order, joining CBS' The Mentalist, Fox's Fringe and CW's 90210."

Love it or hate it, this could prove to be great news for fans of the Original Series -- the producers were in talks to bring David Hasselhoff back as Michael Knight, Sr. at the end of the season.

Congratulations to the cast and crew!

K.I.T.T.'s Facial Recognition Mode: Science Fact?

Discover Magazine has an interesting article on one of K.I.T.T.'s new features in their Science Not Fiction blogs: Facial Recognition.

"In Knight Rider, our resident crime fighters rely pretty heavily on K.I.T.T.’s ability to find people. He accesses a government database — usually the DMV — and then connects to various surveillance cameras in the area... what’s really amazing here is K.I.T.T.’s ability to digitally match photos to a moving image. For modern law enforcement and software search companies, that’s something of a holy grail."

It goes on to talk about the applications of the technology in the real world, and the problems that have been encountered with it so far: Tampa police tried to use it in 2001 to monitor areas with a buzzing night life, and in 2002, security in Boston’s Logan airport tried to use it. In both cases, the recognition rate was so poor, they decided to scrap the systems. Manchester Airport in England is testing the system and it not only fails to make the best matches, but if two people walk through the scanner together, it will only notice the first one. Not quite at Knight Industries' standards just yet.

They claim that breakthroughs are just around the corner. "In 2006, computer scientists competing in the Face Recognition Grand Challenge discovered that their algorithms were so good that, under ideal conditions, they could pick out faces better than even people do. The software works so well that it can ID faces turned as much as 90 degrees. What K.I.T.T. has mastered, and what we’re still working on, is applying that technology here in the real world with imperfect light, moving targets, and the evasions of people who maybe don’t want to be recognized. Seems like we’ll get there sooner or later."

Justin Bruening Talks Knight Rider

The Sioux City Journal has an interview with Justin Bruening, where he talks about his background, getting discovered, and of course, Knight Rider.

"I was the second person to read for Knight Rider," he tells them proudly. "I'm a fan of the original series and there were things I wanted to see in the pilot, but we can't fit everything from a four-year show into two hours. Now, if we run five years, we can."

When asked about doing his own stunts, Justin tells them, "I'm trying to do reverse 180s and slide a car into the camera without hitting anyone -- which is really nerve-racking. It's not that I'm not comfortable behind the wheel, but if there's a group of 30 people standing there and I have to slide the car, I don't want to hit them." His stunt driver "can take a car and make it go in a circle all day long. It's amazing." The goal is for Justin to be able to do all of those stunts without help. He currently does 98 percent of the fights after training he received between the pilot and the series. "I've come out bruised and banged up, but nothing that wouldn't have happened anyway."

Since landing Knight Rider, Bruening reveals he hasn't had one speeding ticket: "I haven't had any since college. And that was a speed trap."

Dave Andron on 'A Hard Day's Knight'

Dave Andron, who scripted last night's episode, shares his thoughts and experiences over at NBC's Official Knight Rider Blog. "It’s been a blast," he says. "To be perfectly blunt with you, this is a big show, and far as I’m concerned, the more help the better. So GST was hired to come in and steer the ship. Great writers. More great crew. And more great actors. We’re having fun, and you know why?

"Because Knight Rider is fun. Or, at least, it should be. But in addition to fun there have to be stakes, or else why do we care? So when I sat down to write my episode I decided I wanted to see Mike really get pushed to the brink, and watch our team rally around him."

Doug Liman Talks Knight Rider

Doug Liman, who has produced and directed some of the most successful action movies of the last few years, was part of the team assembled by NBC to bring Knight Rider back late last year. He's been talking to CanMag about his role as executive producer and his thoughts on K.I.T.T.'s development as a character.

"I try to just give the people who are working on the show the confidence to take chances," he says, "because I've always been rewarded personally in my own career by taking chances. So I try to just create an environment where the directors we've hired and the editors we've hired feel some sense of the freedom that I've personally given myself to just go for it."

Liman thinks that this K.I.T.T., voiced by Val Kilmer, is becoming a full, three-dimensional character, and compares what Gary Scott Thompson is doing with the high-level characterisations found in many of today's animated movies. "When you watch what Gary's doing, he's made K.I.T.T. into such a complete character," Liman says, "as complete as a character would be in an animated movie that you actually forget that he's a car. I'm telling you, you forget it. I honestly think that of all the characters, K.I.T.T. actually has probably the biggest arc, is in a way the most complete character. I guess it makes sense because the car is at the center of the show. Unlike the TV movie, he's built an arc that will run over the course of the series because he's really embraced the fact that okay, if this is artificial intelligence, K.I.T.T. is going to be learning."

CanMag suggest that it is that learning curve that forms K.I.T.T.'s story arc for the series. Liman elaborates, "K.I.T.T. is actually going through all the stages of youth and adolescence so it's actually incredibly entertaining and it's incredibly interesting because this character is going through all the stages that a human being might go through. I don't know when you stop growing. I certainly feel like I'm still growing but this character is going through all those stages of a lifetime in the course of a year or two years."

Knight Writers on Knight of the Iguana

Rob Wright, who scripted last night's adventure, shares his experiences over at NBC's Official Knight Rider Blog. "This was a BIG episode," he says. "We had to shoot on the water (time-consuming, lots of variables)... we had to shoot out in the desert (time-consuming, lots of snakes)... we had to shoot underwater and then launch a missile at a nuclear power plant that doesn’t really exist (lots of visual effects which takes tons of time to create).

"In other words, every day of making this episode was filled with the excitement and anxiety of "Did we or didn’t we?" Did we find a decent beach? Do our actors know how to handle themselves in the water? Did we get the last shot before it got too dark? Will we get the next shot before the tide comes in? If we shift scenes in editing, will everything still make sense? Will all the visual effects be finished in time and look good? When confronted with all this, how will we react; what will we do?"

It's fascinating stuff, but if you haven't seen the episode be warned... there are spoilers.

Newsarama Interview Paul Campbell

Newsarama have an in-depth interview with Knight Rider's Paul Campbell, who plays Knight Industries tech Billy Morgan. Whether it's his character's natural comic relief or Campbell's own off-screen persona, Billy has already become a favourite with fans and the network alike -- the Official Website has unveiled a blog by the character, in which he reveals his life "behind the episodes" and interacts with the audience.

"The most challenging part of playing Billy is often understanding what he’s talking about," chuckles Campbell. "He deals with many of the show’s technological aspects, and I’m not a computer guy by any means. However, I end up spouting off this sort of techno-talk, and when I initially read a script I have no idea what I’m even talking about. So I spend a great deal of time asking loads of questions and trying to figure out what all this stuff means. That’s the only way I can memorize my lines and speak them in a convincing manner. After all, if you don’t know what you’re saying, then it might as well be in another language.

"So that’s definitely the most challenging part of my job. The rest of it is just playtime. That’s one of the beautiful things about coming onto a show with a team of people that are willing to let [the creative process] be collaborative and give the actors their space to do what they want, within reason, of course," he jokes. "That’s an ideal situation and what we have here on Knight Rider. When you spend 15 hours a day with people, eventually you’re going to get pretty close to them. They say there’s always one rotten apple, but, truthfully, we don’t have one of those. Everyone is really enthusiastic and working their butts off."

He remains in awe of Knight Rider's centrepiece set. "Once you walk inside the studio, the K.I.T.T.Cave, specifically, is just monstrous," he says. "It takes up the entire floor and has a rotating gimbal in the center. They had to bring excavators in to dig out the pit in order to install the gimbal. I mean, you drive K.I.T.T. onto this thing and it rolls the vehicle around spherically. You can’t help but be impressed by the time, money and effort that went into building a set as detailed as this one. It’s great to start a new job and immediately feel like you’re in good hands and have the support of whoever is putting the money into [the show] because that doesn’t always happen."

Most of his scenes are confined to the SSC, but as Newsarama conducted their interview he had been filming on location for the upcoming episode Knight of the Zodiac, in which he gets to go on the road with Mike. Campbell enjoys playing up the differences between the two characters. "I liken the relationship between Michael and Billy to that of Fight Club, a la Ed Norton’s and Brad Pitt’s characters," he says. "To me, Michael Traceur is everything that Billy wishes he was. He’s the charming, good-looking action man to my character’s somewhat nebbish, awkward geekiness. They’re really good friends, but polar opposites as well, which results in some amusing interplay between the two. I actually read for the role of [Mike] in the TV movie. It was one of those auditions that I really dragged my feet on because I knew just from reading the casting breakdown that there was no way I’d get the part. I went in, though, reluctantly, and needless to say it didn’t go well. However, I later got a call to come back in and read for the young boy genius, Billy Morgan. They were looking for someone with comedic timing and I thought, 'Hey, I can do that.' I was the first person to go in and read for the part, and they phoned a couple of days later and said, 'We’d like you for the job,' and that was that."

The Knight Industries Robots

The Marion Star have a feature on the two robots that work on K.I.T.T. in the SSC. Named Katie and Lisa by NBC, they are two reconditioned industrial Fanuc ArcMate 100i RJ2 robots and were provided by the company RobotWorx, who are now enjoying the exposure.

"I was very impressed that they figured so prominently in the storyline,” said Michael Hall, RobotWorx customer service manager. "Hopefully, they’ll be a regular feature, and they’ll be in at least one or two scenes per episode. The folks at Universal are going to be the ones that make the final call on that." He adds that the show’s producers plan to increase the amount of humanlike interaction the machines have with their human co-stars, in the style of Mike's high-five with with one of them.

Keith Wanner, owner of RobotWorx, said, "Anything like [Knight Rider] just gives more credibility to what we do as a company. When somebody sees us and they know we’ve done something like Modern Marvels or Knight Rider, it just helps our business."

In the first episode, A Knight In Shining Armor, Katie and Lisa generated scanning beams across K.I.T.T.'s surface as they inspected him for damage. Hall reveals that this is television magic. "The scanning is not too far from the truth [but] a lot of what you’re going to see in any type of television show or feature film is going to kind of delve into the realm of science fiction. There are robots in the automotive industry that do scan auto parts. Some of it is not really as far removed from reality as we think."

Michael is sent to Las Vegas on an assignment to track down a missing person, and the clues lead him to a cold, calculating man with a $50 million fortune, an indestructible eighteen-wheeler, and a face that is Michael's mirror image...

It guest-starred Barbara Rush, Zakes Mokae, and Shawn Southwick.
