Knight Fever & The "Reboot"

Knight Fever, the second episode of the series to be filmed and the next to air, is being held back until New Year's Eve, December 31st. In that show, Mike must stop the spread of a computer virus that threatens a total global meltdown. The job gets much harder when K.I.T.T. is infected. Meanwhile, Mike's jealousy begins to show when Sarah reconnects with an old flame who may be the key to solving the latest mission.

Shapeshifter, a Knight Rider insider, tells Knight Rider Online, "The show IS going to change quite a bit after [Knight Fever]... Eps 10 and 11 will be the transitional episodes, and a lot is going to happen. It won't just be dropping some characters -- the whole mission, and organization behind the mission, is going to change, and the K.I.T.T. cave, when used at all, will be utilized in a different way. Their whole world is going to be rocked."

Newsarama Interview Paul Campbell

Newsarama have an in-depth interview with Knight Rider's Paul Campbell, who plays Knight Industries tech Billy Morgan. Whether it's his character's natural comic relief or Campbell's own off-screen persona, Billy has already become a favourite with fans and the network alike -- the Official Website has unveiled a blog by the character, in which he reveals his life "behind the episodes" and interacts with the audience.

"The most challenging part of playing Billy is often understanding what he’s talking about," chuckles Campbell. "He deals with many of the show’s technological aspects, and I’m not a computer guy by any means. However, I end up spouting off this sort of techno-talk, and when I initially read a script I have no idea what I’m even talking about. So I spend a great deal of time asking loads of questions and trying to figure out what all this stuff means. That’s the only way I can memorize my lines and speak them in a convincing manner. After all, if you don’t know what you’re saying, then it might as well be in another language.

"So that’s definitely the most challenging part of my job. The rest of it is just playtime. That’s one of the beautiful things about coming onto a show with a team of people that are willing to let [the creative process] be collaborative and give the actors their space to do what they want, within reason, of course," he jokes. "That’s an ideal situation and what we have here on Knight Rider. When you spend 15 hours a day with people, eventually you’re going to get pretty close to them. They say there’s always one rotten apple, but, truthfully, we don’t have one of those. Everyone is really enthusiastic and working their butts off."

He remains in awe of Knight Rider's centrepiece set. "Once you walk inside the studio, the K.I.T.T.Cave, specifically, is just monstrous," he says. "It takes up the entire floor and has a rotating gimbal in the center. They had to bring excavators in to dig out the pit in order to install the gimbal. I mean, you drive K.I.T.T. onto this thing and it rolls the vehicle around spherically. You can’t help but be impressed by the time, money and effort that went into building a set as detailed as this one. It’s great to start a new job and immediately feel like you’re in good hands and have the support of whoever is putting the money into [the show] because that doesn’t always happen."

Most of his scenes are confined to the SSC, but as Newsarama conducted their interview he had been filming on location for the upcoming episode Knight of the Zodiac, in which he gets to go on the road with Mike. Campbell enjoys playing up the differences between the two characters. "I liken the relationship between Michael and Billy to that of Fight Club, a la Ed Norton’s and Brad Pitt’s characters," he says. "To me, Michael Traceur is everything that Billy wishes he was. He’s the charming, good-looking action man to my character’s somewhat nebbish, awkward geekiness. They’re really good friends, but polar opposites as well, which results in some amusing interplay between the two. I actually read for the role of [Mike] in the TV movie. It was one of those auditions that I really dragged my feet on because I knew just from reading the casting breakdown that there was no way I’d get the part. I went in, though, reluctantly, and needless to say it didn’t go well. However, I later got a call to come back in and read for the young boy genius, Billy Morgan. They were looking for someone with comedic timing and I thought, 'Hey, I can do that.' I was the first person to go in and read for the part, and they phoned a couple of days later and said, 'We’d like you for the job,' and that was that."

NBC Official Site Updated

Paul Campbell's character Billy Morgan -- who is already one of the most popular new additions to the series -- has been given his own blog: Billy's Notes From the Underground. In it, he reveals what's going on in his personal, "behind-the-episodes" life. The first few posts give insight into Billy's thoughts about his promotion , his ex-girlfriend, and life in the SSC/K.I.T.T.-Cave.

The writers of Knight Rider have also got their own space to speak to their audience. NBC has established a Knight Writer's Blog, and Gary Scott Thompson has made the first, introductory message:

"We’ll be posting on this blog regularly to give you some insight on the inner workings of the show. Feel free to post your questions in the comments section below and we’ll try to answer as many of them as possible as we go along. -GST"

No Changes for Carrie Rivai

SciFiWire continue to roll out their coverage to conincide with Knight Rider's primetime premiere, and today it's focused on Sydney Tamiia Poitier and her character, Carrie Rivai. Rivai was by far the most controversial character in the pilot, based purely on her introductory scenes involving a supposed lesbian one-night-stand. "I was really surprised that people were thinking about it and that they were so concerned," Poitier says. "Bottom line, to be honest, I don't think you are going to see her have a personal life. She literally lives [in the K.I.T.T.-Cave], and she is head of security, watching everyone 24/7, and has responsibilities. You're not going to see her out on a date with someone or see her wink at somebody... I don't think you're going to see her have any kind of life, unfortunately, but you never know."

There has been talk that Rivai's background has been altered for the series, but Gary Scott Thompson reveals that that is not necessarily so. "My inclination is to leave her as she was," Thompson says. "Why change it? But the thing about my argument is that, in the case of Anne Heche, she was straight, then bi, then a lesbian, then bi, then straight. If [Rivai] is actually bisexual, she would appear different ways, depending on the situation. Of course, in my book, that would make her a much more interesting character, much like Capt. Jack Harkness in Torchwood. If I could use Jack in Torchwood as a role model -- I would absolutely use him as a role model -- I love his conflictedness about... everybody. He's real cool."

That's doesn't mean that Knight Rider is going to follow Torchwood's lead, and introduce overt sexuality into the weekly adventures. "We can't get away with what they do," Thompson adds. "America is extremely [prudish], and we're living in a Republican regime, where it becomes even more [so]. The reality is that there are people who are out there who are bisexual. There are people who are gay, that's the reality... It's, like, deal with it. I mean, trying to shove people back in the closet isn't correct."
